Cruagh was first mentioned in two 9th century Irish manuscripts, Vita tripartita Sancti Patricii and The Book of Armagh. The former is a bilingual Life of Patrick, written in Irish and Latin from in the late 9th century. The latter is an Irish manuscript written mainly in Latin in the early 9th century. The reference, pictured above, is to Saint Dalua, who is mentioned in page 2 in the book. We find reference to him in the form of Rigell mater duLuae Chroibige, meaning Richell, mother [of] DuLuae of Chroibige. Chroibige is therefore the first name of Cruagh that we find. In Vita tripartita Sancti Patricii cruagh is mentioned as Croibech.
Cruagh can not be found mentioned for another 3 centuries, until it is mentioned as Creuach in a 12th century register. This name seems to change into Creuagh by the 14th century and then Crewagh by the 1500's. It then takes shape into the present name and in an 1810 map it is eventually called Cruagh. The Irish name Craobhach, similar to the one found in the tripartita, means Branches or a branchy place. Creuach means a round swelling hill. Another former name, Creevy, also means a branchy place.
